Back when all the kids were younger and at home, my husband treated my mom and I to a cooking class. He may have been sensing that I was going a little crazy at home and ready for an evening out! My mom and I had the best time! And I walked away with a basic peach crisp recipe with oats that I have tweaked over the years!

Peach Crisp Recipe with Oats
Crisp oats, brown sugar, and butter are the perfect combination for a winning dessert that everyone loves. While others may choose a nice cobbler, I will always be suckered in by a crisp, crunchy oat topping. Cobblers are fruit desserts that have a dough or biscuit type topping. But crisps have a flour, oat, and brown sugar combination for their topping! Yum!
For my peach crisp recipe with oats, I use rolled oats. The whole oats create more of a crispness to the topping and are slightly better for you than quick oats. And the whole oats brown nicely!
Peach Crisp with Fresh Peaches or Frozen
My husband loves peaches so my summer crisp recipe has a lot more peaches. You can use fresh or frozen peaches. I have made this old-fashioned peach crisp with both fresh and frozen berries. The summer dessert turns out delightful either way!
PEACH TIP: If you are using fresh peaches, wash and gently peel your peaches. I don’t go to all the trouble to dip peaches in scalding water to peel entire skin. I simply use a good pairing knife or this amazing OXO peeler (so nice for those who have wrist pain!) and peel most of the skin. If you still have some peach skin on your peaches, it is fine.
Then I slice into thick slices so the peaches will hold their shape nicely in your crisp.
If you are using frozen peaches, I make the peach crisp with oats while peaches are still mostly frozen. Making the crisp while the peaches are still frozen helps to speed up the baking process and the peaches don’t have a chance to get soggy!
What Berry Pairs Well with Peaches
As much as my country boy loves his peaches, I decided to keep the idea of the peach and berry combination as I love how peaches pair with blackberries or blueberries.
Here is the Ohio/ Kentucky Valley, blackberries are very popular and grow really well. Mid-summer the blackberries come on and are plentiful at fruit stands and wild blackberry patches. I was so excited to find numerous wild berry patches growing around our farm.
Blackberries is a berry the goes well with peaches! And the golden orange peaches and blue-black blackberries colors look so pretty together making your peach crisp dessert even more tempting!
You can also try blueberries in this peach crisp. When blackberries are not in season, blueberries are often easier to find in the store.
How to Make Peach Crisp with Oats
Prepare your fruit by washing and slicing your peaches. Rinse and measure out your blackberries.
Place fruit in a bowl and sprinkle with sugar. Toss fruit gently. Add the almond flavoring, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Stir. Transfer fruit to a casserole bowl.
Next combine your topping by softening your butter in a microwave bowl. Stir in your oats, flour, brown sugar, salt and nutmeg. Stir topping til butter covers everything.
Pour oat topping over peaches and blackberries.
Cook for 40 minutes til fruit crisp is bubbly and top is nicely browned.
Serve plain or with a scoop of ice cream!
